Zang Yibing, also known by the pen name Zang Yibing written with a different final character, is a former professor and dean of the School of Music at Central China Normal University. He holds a master’s degree in music history and a PhD in ethnomusicology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has served as a researcher at the university’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center, director of the Hubei Music Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, a specially appointed expert for CCTV Music’s Folk Songs of China, and a member of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance. His books include A History of Chinese Music and Music as Culture, and he has published dozens of papers on Chinese notation, musical behavior, rural musical life, folk singers, and oral history. His fieldwork volume Folk Songs and Requiem examines the sixty-year relationship among a Han folk singer, society, history, and music, interpreting culture through people and people through culture. Zang has lectured at Spring Valley Academy since 2021.
