Zhang Lingzhi teaches calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. Born into a family of calligraphers and painters, she began studying calligraphy with her father at age eight. She received multiple first prizes in national calligraphy and Chinese painting competitions and a youth award in the Sackler Cup International Calligraphy Competition. She entered Nanjing University of the Arts in 1996, where her work Study of a Young Woman was retained in the university collection. She began working in arts education in 2001 and co-founded Gantang Aesthetic Education in 2009. Reconsidering arts education in 2013, she concluded that it must expand into the whole field of education and return from the pursuit of concepts to individual lived experience. In 2014, she established a guiding principle: without deep and concrete observation, there can be no genuine artistic learning. At the end of 2016 she began organizing Moon Courtyard, devoted to protective and symbiotic learning in which children’s observation and thinking are carefully safeguarded and educators and learners grow together. She has taught visual arts in Spring Valley EWIP since 2018.
